MECPA in collaboration Oyam DLG has successfully implemented the change project and currently is in phase II, ‘Strengthening sector coordination processes under environment and energy mainstreaming to increase CSO participation in programs and interventions in Oyam DLG’.

MECPA Climate Justice

1. Milestones and Achievements (2021)

Working with trained Community Based Monitors (CBM) to conduct climate community score cards, identify gaps, and propose strategies to protect the Orit wetland. Achievements include:

  • Establishment of a climate-smart irrigation demo site.
  • Successful leadership engagement for environment protection.
  • Mindset change through capacity building for staff and beneficiaries.
  • Waste management initiatives that reduced plastic pollution.
  • Visible vegetation regeneration in Orit wetland (Otol area).

2. The Situation Before Intervention

High degradation due to waragi and wine factories using wetlands as dumping sites. Influential people were cultivating in wetlands with impunity. After intervention, communities are now aware of their civil, social, and economic rights to defend these resources.

Successes Registered:

  • Strong partnerships with GIZ CUSP, PREEEP, and Local Governments.
  • CBMs capacitated in reporting and Alternative Dispute Resolution.
  • Community voices amplified through reflection meetings.

3. Challenges Faced

Outstanding challenges included resistance from those farming in wetlands, political propaganda claiming land grabbing, and a lack of budget allocation for environment committees at lower local government levels.
